A Message from the Committee
A great many of you who read this will not be able to attend this year’s Fair but for those of you who do I wish you a very warm welcome to Ferry Fair 2016, the eightieth of our Fairs in its current form. Fair week begins on Monday 8 August and continues all week with the crowning ceremony on Saturday 13 August. Full details and timings of all the activities can be found in our programme which will be on sale in advance of Fair week from many local outlets. I would ask you to note that this year the Fair will continue into Sunday 14 August with the Allan Meldrum Community Rowing Challenge taking place on the River Forth. I would also ask you to note that once again, and completely outwith our control, we have had to cancel the Friday evening Wheelbarrow Race and the Saturday Burgh Races. This is due to the dangerous and unsafe condition of our High Street. It is to be hoped that adequate repairs will have been carried out before Ferry Fair 2017.
My heartiest congratulations and best wishes go to our Queen for 2016, Martha Maxwell and to Gracious Lady Jean Meldrum who will crown Martha on Ferry Fair Day.
This week-long event brings to a conclusion (successfully we hope) another year of hard work and preparation by this Committee with invaluable help from our dedicated volunteers to whom I am deeply grateful. One of our most important activities throughout the past year has been fundraising to make sure that the finances are in place to allow everything to happen: for example the cost of hiring our stage, the costs for all the bands which entertain us on Ferry Fair Day including the main act on the stage and the costs for hiring all the equipment which provides the entertainment and activities during the whole week. These costs are substantial but unavoidable in order to present the Fair which our community deserves. Further information on our finances can be seen here. I wish to record on behalf of all my colleagues my sincere gratitude to the residents, organisations and businesses who gladly contribute to all our fundraising activities.
Sincere thanks also go to Police Scotland, the City of Edinburgh Council and the Rotary Club of South Queensferry whose help and co-operation cannot be understated.
To organise successfully a Fair of the type we have become accustomed to involves a great many people who all contribute in their own way, including those dedicated individuals who make up the organising committee: on this, it is likely that in the very near future some of our members will be retiring. This means that we will be even more in need of additional help and support: anyone who would like to become involved, or would like to find out more is invited to come along to our AGM, usually held early in the year with the date well publicised in advance.
Finally may I wish the people of Queensferry and our many visitors a very happy Ferry Fair.
